Manhattanite offers us the long island of velocity chess avid gamers within the park, tipsy tipplers tipping off the rooftops, the evening sky brilliant with urban gentle, tenants, tenements and supers. Aaron Poochigian is the poet in big apple looking a holy charisma within the track of gunshots and spiral sirens, making a choice on like a grizzled pigeon via stray newspapers, bottles, baggage, and sweet wrappers for a scrap of faith. every one poem is a tower becoming out of our human dust and scraping the sky with sky-lines, and jointly they construct a urban of phrases. positioned big apple on your pocket. It’s within this book.
Reading Aaron Poochigian’s Manhattanite is a dynamic, kinetic adventure. those poems go back and forth at a quick clip, pulling you alongside via cityscapes, wastelands, and different vistas. many of the poems tunnel downward, plumbing depths of temper and reminiscence. Whichever means they circulation, Poochigian’s poems practice with such panache and brio that it’s demanding to grasp no matter if to snort or cry. I’d say do both—and maintain interpreting. yet be warned: this isn’t a feel-good booklet. It’s a fearless book.
Thoreau as soon as boasted that he had traveled generally in harmony; Aaron Poochigian’s identify shows that he has traveled broadly elsewhere—in the single borough worthy experiencing, via western deserts, aboard “an present day teach/ lisping via French or German woods,” and in a Paris of bare bulbs and seedy cabarets. In all of those settings, he deftly choreographs his forged of anonymous characters. The concluding strains of “Song: pass and Do It” declare, “I’ll nonetheless swear/ shall we feel free anywhere.” One convinced place of that “anywhere” exists among the covers of Manhattanite.
